“Gideon said to God, “If you will save Israel by my hand as you have promised— look, I will place a wool fleece on the threshing floor. If there is dew only on the fleece and all the ground is dry, then I will know that you will save Israel by my hand, as you said.” And that is what happened. Gideon rose early the next day; he squeezed the fleece and wrung out the dew—a bowlful of water.” Judges 6:36-38
Gideon wondered why all sorts of bad things were happening in his life. Much like we often ask the question in this world today, as to why God would allow bad things to happen. God didn’t promise a world without trouble, He just promised that He would be with us. This world isn’t all there is to look forward to, it’s simply a journey to where we are going. (Judges 6:11-12) We often test God and look for signs that God is with us, or when God asks us to do a task, we feel short of what we are called, and question God.
“Then Gideon said to God, “Do not be angry with me. Let me make just one more request. Allow me one more test with the fleece, but this time make the fleece dry and let the ground be covered with dew.” That night God did so. Only the fleece was dry; all the ground was covered with dew.” – Judges 6:39
Gideon tested God over and over again even though God has responded to his requests. It’s like once wasn’t enough? The enemy likes to come at us with doubt and unbelief, even after we have received a miracle; he likes to make us believe that it’s all in our heads. Jesus was also tempted in his time on earth.
“Jesus answered, “It is said: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.” – Luke 4:12
Usually when you let go of insecurities, and just have faith in what you can’t see, and seek God diligently, God will reward you. God promised signs and miracles would follow them that believe. God gave Noah the rainbow after the flood as a promise, and we can still see it today. God understands where we are, it’s no surprise to Him.
“And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.” – Hebrews 11:6
“And these signs shall follow them that believe; in my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues;”- Mark 16:17
After God delivered the Israelites out of Egypt they still went on to worship other God’s in their land, and so God gave them over to the Midianites. Gideon was considered a mighty warrior in the eyes of God; even though Gideon did not feel this way, he doubted God. I believe Gideon’s doubts were based on fear, which is not of God.
“For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline.” – 2 Timothy 1:7
I’ve heard the saying before, “Send out a fleece to find an answer to your question.” God will answer requests that line up with his will, and direct your path. There is no formula or magic spell needed, although I believe God will honor anything that you do in faith. If you have doubts, be honest with God, and allow him to show you who He is. Doubt is not a huge sign of unbelief it simply means that you have unanswered questions, and you are passionate about finding the answer. God loves questions, and wants to show himself to you. So go ahead and ask.
