“And I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you. And I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh.” Ezekiel 36:26
One of my favorite pastimes as a kid was to go to the beach and skim rocks on the water. On a recent trip to a place called Hopewell Rocks in NB Canada, I was reminded of some very important principles of life; a principle of the heart.
Hopewell Rocks is a beautiful place that attracts many tourists, as you get to walk on the ocean floor after the tide has gone out, and see all the beautiful structures that are left uncovered.
After being so overwhelmed with the amazing view I decided to start searching for stones to take home with me for a souvenir. My dad and I walked along searching, keeping some, and throwing some out. Each time I found a prospective stone I began the arduous process of examining it and deciding whether I should keep it or move on. No matter what beauty I found, I was always looking for something better. I had spent so much time focusing on the rocks I forgot what I was standing on – the ocean floor!
Hopewell rocks is home of the highest tide in the world. It is quite a phenomenon. I looked up from.my rocks and saw that I was spending so much time focusing on little pebbles that i was missing out on the bigger picture. The tall structures that surrounded me were so amazing compared to the small pebbles. Sometimes you need to walk with your head up to see the better picture! When you walk with your head down, all you see are pebbles. The beautiful creation all around me was being ignored! I skimmed some of the rocks back into the ocean and put a couple in my pocket and moved on. Sometimes pebbles can become like mountains, when they are meant to be pebbles to walk on.
Isn’t that like life’s problems sometimes. We spend so much time searching for solutions to our little problems that we neglect to see the bigger picture. God has already taken care of some of the biggest problems we deal with … He also cares about the minute details of our lives. The so called “pebbles” we face in life are just that…pebbles Compared to the promises of God, we don’t have to worry about all the details, just be willing to go along for the ride and trust him to take care of the rest.
The tide will eventually comes back and wash up all the little pebbles leaving only the most beautiful visible. God does that for us. If we give up our problems to him he will wash it away and leave us with a better picture.
If we focus on too attentively on our problems, our hearts eventually harden and block us from receiving what God has for us, or distracts us from seeing the bigger picture. If we focus on the positive and let go of all those pebbles that steal our time and our joy, we clear our minds enough to hear Gods voice. That’s when the miraculous happens.
Jesus is the foundation we can stand on and trust in for any situation or problem we face …. He is unshaken by the tides of life, much like the strong structure of the Hopewell rocks. He has a purpose, and a hope and plan for our future if we trust Him to work out the details. Just sit on the mountain and enjoy the view 🙂
“The name of the LORD is a strong tower: the righteous runneth into it, and is safe.” Proverbs 18:10 (NIV)
“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you.You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.” Jeremiah 29:11-13
