Life and Death

“Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.” Proverbs 18:21

God says that the power of life and death is largely influenced by the words we speak. It has the power to change situations, to evoke faith, to put someone down or build someone up.

When the Israelite’s were wandering through the desert for 40 years being tested, instead of entering the promised land, it was because of their constant muttering and complaining that stopped the blessing of God in it’s tracks. God provided all that they needed and more, yet the more they received the more they complained, instead of preserving an attitude of gratitude for the God that loved them. God tested them, proved himself to them over and over, and gave them opportunity after opportunity, and still they complained.

“Take the staff, and you and your brother Aaron gather the assembly together. Speak to that rock before their eyes and it will pour out its water. You will bring water out of the rock for the community so they and their livestock can drink.” Numbers 20:8

God gave clear instructions to Moses to speak to the rock. The first time God provided water for the people and livestock, Moses was to strike the rock. The second time he was to speak to the rock. This is like a foreshadow to the fact that in the first covenant with God (Law) animals were to be sacrificed for sins, and circumcision was required. It was a physical act of obedience that would preserve life. It also points to Jesus being smitten the first time, but was never to be smitten a second time. The second covenant with God (Jesus) dying on the cross, now gives us the ability to speak to God directly for forgiveness. Because we now have the Holy Spirit living in us, we can speak to situations in our life in Jesus name, and God’s mercy can change our lives. Moses was to speak the second time, meaning Jesus (the rock of our salvation) was never to be beaten again.

“So Moses took the staff from the Lord’s presence, just as he commanded him. He and Aaron gathered the assembly together in front of the rock and Moses said to them, “Listen, you rebels, must we bring you water out of this rock?” Then Moses raised his arm and struck the rock twice with his staff. Water gushed out, and the community and their livestock drank. But the Lord said to Moses and Aaron, “Because you did not trust in me enough to honor me as holy in the sight of the Israelite’s, you will not bring this community into the land I give them.” Numbers 20:9-12

Moses did not obey God’s instructions, and he smote the rock instead of speaking to it, and for that there were consequences. Much like we forget that we have the ability to pray about things, but we would sometimes rather put our hands to the plow, or complain or react out of anger and try to figure things out for ourselves. We can spend a lot of time with the wilderness attitude, that we forget God already has an answer for our situations, one that will lead us into victory not more confusion. Sometimes this wilderness like attitude can be dangerous and lead us into a place of spiritual death rather than promotion. Moses was so angry with the Israelite’s for complaining, that he reacted out of anger and that got him into trouble. This shows that even the best of Christians, some in leadership positions even, can fall into this trap. We are not righteous without God, and we are weak in our flesh.

God being the God that he is still provided water for the Israelite’s and livestock, but the consequences of their leader, and their actions proved deadly. Some died on their way to the promised land, some struggled the entire way there, and Moses didn’t make it at all. Grace proves that we cannot be righteous in our own right, we need God to direct us and keep us. Grace did what the Law could not accomplish. The whole point of Moses ministry was to show us that it isn’t enough to read and abide by a bunch of laws and think that we are going to make it. You can live your life acting out the laws but if your heart isn’t right you are bound to fail. We need the truth and the spirit of God living in us to succeed.

“Who also hath made us able ministers of the new testament; not of the letter, but of the spirit: for the letter killeth, but the spirit giveth life.” 2 Corinthians 3:6

“For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh.” Romans 8:3

We are so blessed to live in the dispensation of Grace. We now have a covenant with God that says, I have already paid the debt for everything you will ever face. It doesn’t matter what you did yesterday, today, or ten years from now. God knows exactly where we are headed and the mistakes we will make, and He has the answers for it all. When we struggle we need not sacrifice or struggle to figure it out for ourselves or repeat verses or chants, we simply need to call out to God and trust Him to lead us into victory.

For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit 1 Peter 3:18

“Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you: For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened. Or what man is there of you, whom if his son ask bread, will he give him a stone? Or if he ask a fish, will he give him a serpent? If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your Father which is in heaven give good things to them that ask him?” Matthew 7:7-11

What is it that you are needing in your life right now? What is hindering you from fully becoming the man or woman God intended you to be? Where do you need a victory in your life? GOD has the answer. Wherever you are right now, just speak to the big rock in your life, and out of it will pour the mercy of God. The power of life and death are resting on your words, simply speak life over the situation in Jesus name, worship Him in spirit and truth. The solution is there waiting. God Bless!
