    Hook, Line, and Sinker

Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death. James 1:15 The expression “Hook, Line, and Sinker” was birthed in 1865. Literally it means the fish took not only the bait, but swallowed the hook, line, and sinker whole. If someone played a trick on you and you fell for it immediately, they might say you fell for it hook, line and sinker! Fish are sometimes smart and will test things out before biting. Others just impulsively go for whatever is dangled in front of them. They face a moment of decision; one that is a matter of life or death.…

The rock and the hard place – the “but” in the valley.

And Saul and the men of Israel were gathered together, and pitched by the valley of Elah, and set the battle in array against the Philistines. And the Philistines stood on a mountain on the one side, and Israel stood on a mountain on the other side: and there was a valley between them. 1 Samuel 17:2-3 The saying, “I’m between a rock and a hard place,” is a place of two possibilities, neither of which seems acceptable. The place we are at seems like it is hard enough but getting to the place we want to be can seem harder. We know God is on both sides as He is everywhere, but when we…

    Working, Watering, Warning

According to the grace of God which was given to me, as a wise master builder I have laid the foundation, and another builds on it. But let each one take heed how he builds on it. 1 Corinthians 3:10 The Church (the body of Christ) is God’s design. Paul was used by God as an architect to establish the foundation of the church; a foundation that cannot be changed by man (1 Corinthians 3:11). Paul worked to plant the seed for the church, Apollos oversaw watering the seed, but God was the one who gave the increase. (1 Corinthians 3:6) God created the body and gave us instructions on how…

For such a time as this

For if thou altogether holdest thy peace at this time, then shall there enlargement and deliverance arise to the Jews from another place; but thou and thy father’s house shall be destroyed: and who knoweth whether thou art come to the kingdom for such a time as this? Esther 4:14 If Esther chose to sit back and become passive to Gods call, God would have moved on to someone else. His purpose will always come to pass, but her life’s purpose would have passed her by. We must be careful not to become so complacent in our walk with God, that we cannot hear His voice when He calls us…

    Sacrifice of Praise

For by one offering he hath perfected forever them that are sanctified. Hebrews 10:14 An offering is a gift you present that is accepted or rejected. A sacrifice is something you surrender or give up for the sake of someone or something else. If you offer your neighbor a ride home, that is a gift. If you offer someone on the other side of town a ride home, that is a sacrifice – it’s costing you something. After the fall of man, sin offerings were required continually because man could not conquer sin by the law alone. Man needed a savior. Jesus sacrificed himself once for all mankind. Love is…

    Knock Knock

Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hears my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me. Revelation 3:20 Now is the part where you say – who’s there? It’s annoying when you knock on a door and get no answer or speak to someone and get no response. It usually happens with those you love and can leave you feeling rejected. Jesus is knocking and is continually rejected. Sometimes after we invite Him in we fail to acknowledge His presence in our lives, or only allow him in some areas of our lives.…

    Demolition Day

Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ. 2 Corinthians 10:5 I love home improvement shows. The idea of seeing old abandoned homes get torn down and made like new. When we come to Jesus, or return to Him, He does the exact same thing. He takes away the destruction that sin caused and creates a new man; or restores us to our original design. Transformation can be a difficult process, but it is necessary. We must break down old thought patterns, old habits, and wrongful teachings. If the foundation is not…

Do you know what I know?

Having eyes, see ye not? and having ears, hear ye not? and do ye not remember? Mark 8:18 Do you know what I know? Christmas wasn’t that long ago, and the carols have pretty well died off on the radio, but I am still humming a couple of them. The message of Christmas really is for every day, not just one. I  got stuck on one song in particular as I hummed away called “Do you hear what I hear.” It is a common song during Christmas. When listening to this song I hear a profound message in it. In a nutshell it says, do you know Him? During Jesus’…

    This little light of mine

In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven. Matthew 5:16 I didn’t grow up in a christian home. I celebrated Halloween like all the other kids, and thought nothing of it. All I knew is that I got to dress up and collect a bunch of candy! Seems innocent enough. I remember going by certain houses and they had their lights completely turned off. No decoration or sign of life; nothing. Everyone said they were Christians and they don’t believe in celebrating Halloween. We simply didn’t go to those houses because we didn’t feel invited,…
